Introduction
Art is the universal language of communication, we find many ways to incorporate art into our lives and find ways to make art sustainable. In this course we explore the history of art, the types of art, and the many different styles used to create art. While navigating through this course you will find yourself wanting to be more experimental and try to engage within the creative process of making art, constantly reminding ourselves that anything and everything can be considered an artistic process.
Module Discussions
1. Anything can be considered art, to only think art stretches into paintings, sculptures, and music is absurd. We are surrounded by art, it is what secretly makes our society flow and integrate innovated ideas into our personal lives. Fashion design is a form of artistry, the time of kneading and threading material together to form a singular master piece of an outfit is art. Photography and videography is art. The human body is art itself, the art of dance is a beautiful thing and I’d love to talk more about this. Some people think that dance is just a set of moves we rehearse over and over, which is true if you’ve grown up in a competition setting. But, in dance we often research and explore the idea of what possibly is art and what is dance. If art could be anything, then so could be dance. As I’m typing this, this could be a form of art because I am putting an expression of how I am feeling on paper. There is a constant structure, an emotion, a feeling, a depth, color, value, form of self, movement, texture, and time. For us to decide what is art and what isn’t is ridiculous because we are constantly making it unconsciously.
2. I really love all art but I find myself more drawn to watercolor paintings, especially oil paintings. I love how much hidden detail is put into oil paintings and how I can observe them for hours. I really like to look at complex abstract paintings that are able to let my imagination run wild, thinking of concepts that would be foreign to the human mind. One of my favorite oil paintings is "Masquerade" by Linda Harrison.
This painting gives me a sense of multidimensionality and makes me think of how when I'm upset and my mind typically tends to be everywhere but the present.

Wassily Kandinsky- "Untitled". This is my favorite piece to look at because it reminds me of being in a place between asleep and awake. It's the sleep deprived feeling I get after cramming in so many hours into my days that just never seem to end, I would just really love to rest my head for at least 5 minutes.

3. I chose to do a sketch drawing then to surround the image in watercolor paint to give off an "aura" type of feeling to the design. I really like the idea of the unknown and the occult and so I took inspiration from the occult and wanted to portray something that reads well. I like to imagine that once I peel back peoples onion layers and get to know them, I can envision them as some animal or creature with a type of energy that surrounds it.
5. The two periods I really loved learning about was the expressionism and realism periods. What I really liked about the expressionist art was the abstract and bright color pops used to create a physical reality. I loved realism art because it gave a sense of realness to it and it felt like I was there experiencing that moment within the painting.
Reflection
Throughout this course I have analyzed, studied, created, and have critically thought about the many different styles of art created in certain periods of history. This course follows SLCC’S General education requirement and promotes ways to use information in a long set of skills that can applied to different fields that you will be accessing throughout your life. General Education courses teach basic skills as well as broaden a student's knowledge of a wide range of subjects. Education is much more than the acquisition of facts; it is being able to use information in meaningful ways in order to enrich one's life. One of my favorite periods to learn about was the Italian Renascence period, I feel like so many iconic figures came from this period and took art to a more delicate, sophisticated, and detailed feeling. Oil on canvas with these artworks really stood out to me and I really like how they all just have this green hue on all of the pieces. It feels very old itself.
